Jeanette pushed the door open and immediately saw Owen sitting there. He looked put together.
He clearly valued today's meeting with her, as he had dressed meticulously. Even his hair was perfectly in place, not a strand out of order.
She let out a small, wry smile. Owen had never cared much about appearances. When had he suddenly started paying this much attention?
She stepped inside, steadied herself, and softly said, "Mr. Knight."
Owen snapped back to attention. His eyes landed on her, and for a moment, they were red-rimmed.
After all these years, Jeanette had clearly suffered. She seemed worn down now, carrying a weight that hadn't been there before. Knowing her illness, he felt a sharp pang in his chest.
He would have preferred seeing her as the lively, stubborn young lady who argued and joked with him. She was someone full of life then.
